What You Need to Know About Attic Insulation For Home Comfort

Getting a well-sealed and properly insulated attic is one of the most important things you can do as an ENERGY STAR® Home Upgrade customer. It can help reduce air leaks and energy waste that contribute to high heating and cooling costs, and make your home more comfortable in both winter and summer.

Spray Pro Insulation levels and uneven distribution are common causes of poor home comfort. You can check your existing attic insulation by looking for areas where it feels cold or warm to the touch, especially around vents, chimneys and electrical wiring. You can also hire a professional to conduct an attic inspection and energy audit. ENERGY STAR also offers rebates and special financing for attic sealing and insulation in some areas.

Attic Insulation Tips for Better Home Comfort

There are several types of attic insulation, including rolled fiberglass batts, cellulose, and spray foam. Evaluating your current insulation involves a visual inspection, measuring thickness and R-value, and assessing overall condition. Blown-in insulation (sometimes referred to as loose-fill) is made from small particles of fiberglass, cellulose, or mineral wool that are blown into the attic space using a blowing machine. It offers comprehensive coverage and fills gaps and cracks more effectively than rolled fiberglass. It is quick to install, but over time it can settle and decrease its R-value. It requires specialized equipment and expertise for installation.

Closed-cell spray foam is a two-part liquid that expands to fill gaps and cracks and provides a superior air barrier. It is more expensive than other attic insulation, but it offers a higher R-value and a greater level of thermal resistance per inch. It is moisture resistant and can withstand high temperatures, but it requires a professional installer due to the chemical handling and safety requirements.
