The Psychological Effects of Online Gaming
Despite this, online gaming is sometimes used as a way to compensate for a lack of in-real-life (IRL) social support and can lead to depressive symptoms. In this longitudinal social network study, we investigated how IRL and online social support, sense of community, and depressive symptoms influenced the structure of gamers’ online gaming connections over time.
Our results showed that individuals who felt more related to the virtual game environment had more psychological ownership of the virtual game world and were more motivated by the feeling of accomplishment in playing challenging games. Furthermore, we found that the direct relationship between relatedness and online gaming addiction was mediated by meaning in life and responsibility. Therefore, adolescents who fulfill their responsibilities and take on challenges in real-life may be protected from the harmful effects of online gaming.
